The Department of Mathematics organized a Guest Lecture on 24th November 2025 at 10:00 AM, delivered by Dr. Annapoorani, Assistant Professor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.
The session focused on the theme “Mathematical Applications Across Arts, Science, and Engineering”, aiming to highlight the importance of mathematics as a universal language that connects diverse disciplines. Dr. Annapoorani began her lecture by explaining the nature of mathematics as the language of nature, rooted in logic, patterns, symmetry, change, and structure. Quoting eminent mathematicians and scientists such as Gauss, Galileo, Einstein, Aryabhata, Archimedes, and Shakuntala Devi, she emphasized the timeless relevance of mathematics in human progress.
The lecture covered fascinating topics including the Fibonacci sequence, its origin, and its presence in nature, art, architecture, technology, robotics, communication systems, computer science, and modern design. Special emphasis was given to the Golden Ratio, demonstrating its applications in human anatomy, medical science, logo design, and aesthetics.
Dr. Annapoorani also introduced advanced and contemporary mathematical concepts such as fractals and fractional differential equations, highlighting their applications in heartbeat modelling, signal processing, biomedical engineering, robotics, and chaotic systems. Real-world applications including weather prediction, MRI and tomography, internet networks, GPS navigation, epidemic modelling, cryptography, artificial intelligence, data analysis, and supply chain management were explained in a simple and engaging manner.
The lecture further explored the vital role of mathematics in everyday technologies such as mobile communication, digital music, search engines, financial systems, satellite navigation, automotive design, crowd control, construction, and public transportation. Through riddles, visual demonstrations, and relatable examples, the session kept students actively engaged and intellectually curious.
The program concluded with an inspiring message encouraging students to overcome their fear of mathematics and approach the subject with confidence and curiosity, reinforcing the idea that mathematics is not merely an academic subject but a powerful tool that shapes the modern world.
The lecture was highly informative and motivating, providing students from engineering disciplines with a broader perspective on the real-life applications of mathematics and its role in interdisciplinary research. The Department of Mathematics sincerely thanks Dr. Annapoorani for sharing her valuable insights and making the session both enlightening and memorable. The Department also expresses its heartfelt gratitude to our Chairman Sir, Correspondent Mam, Dean Mam, and HoD Sir for their constant support and encouragement, which played a crucial role in the successful conduct of this online guest lecture.
